Kay Family Members in 1939 British Register

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I've found several family members in the 1939 British register that was taken just prior to World War II. One of the families was the James Taylor Kay family.

The register lists the following family members:

James T. Kay b. 22 Jul1892 working as general labourer cotton mill
Dinah Kay b. 18 Aug 1895 working at unpaid domestic duties
Child (closed record)
Child (closed record)
Child (closed record)
Jonas Kay b. 19 Jun 1934 at school
Child (closed record)

Because of the Dukinfield Cemetery and Crematorium records, I know that one of the closed records is for Agnes Eleanor (Kay) Gough b. fourth quarter 1924 and died 2 Jun 2007. Agnes was born in Stalybridge while Jonas was born in Ashton Under Lyne. So the question becomes who are the other three children. I did a search in Lancashire BMD and came up the following possible list of family members based on a location and a mother's maiden name of Smith:

James T. Kay b. 22 Jul1892 working as general labourer cotton mill
Dinah Kay b. 18 Aug 1895 working at unpaid domestic duties
Agnes Eleanor Kay b. Q4 1924 Stalybridge
Mary Kay b. Q4 1927 Stalybridge
Margaret Kay b. Q3 1930 Ashton Under Lyne
Jonas Kay b. 19 Jun 1934 Ashton Under Lyne
Edith Kay b. Q1 1936 Ashton Under Lyne

At the moment, the list of family members is just a possible working list. A few of the younger children may very well still be living. This meager start will need more work.

As always, if you have any questions or additional info you can provide, please add a comment to this post.

British Update

I've updated the tree book. Click here to download the latest PDF of the book.

The National Archive of the UK released the 1939 Register, which was taken just prior to World War II. According to the website Find My Past, the register is accurate because the register was used for rationing. Because of its use, people tended to take it seriously and provided accurate information. I found some information for the British members of the McKee family. Here's the updated information.

Surprise in my Cheshire ListServ

I still subscribe to a few lists. Younger researchers might or might not pay attention to this older technology. Basically, you subscribe to an email list, people send emails to the list address, and emails with contents are sent to everybody who subscribes to the list. The Cheshire ListServ has always been an active one and well worth the time to go through the email I receive because of the subscription. I've written about this list before in the post British Bonanza.

Click here to find out more about these lists.

Well today, the very kind Vanessa Dixon posted a link to a YouTube video of Dukinfield Cemetery & Crematorium. The video is basically a walking tour of this large cemetery. I have several burials there. Here's the Find A Grave list:

George Duncan Dodd
Agnes Eleanor Kay Gough
Norman Joseph Gough
Isaac Henshaw
Jane Anderson Smith Henshaw
Dinah Smith Kay
James Taylor Kay
Agnes Eleanor Anderson Smith
Clara Smith

Since I'm not jetting off to Dukinfield anytime soon (sigh...), being able to see Vanessa's video was a lovely surprise. Vanessa has 187 other posted videos. So I suppose I'll be picking through YouTube videos and seeing what else Vanessa has that I might find interesting.

Older technology (ListServ) working with newer technology (YouTube)...It's a good genealogy thing...

P.S. Vanessa also has a photostream on Flickr. Looks like it's visual arts night.

Try Going Local

An article in the online free eZine GenealogyInTime suggested that if you are looking for information outside of the United States that you use the localized Google search engine for the country in question. I have only two international locations that I need to search in: England and Ireland. I decided to check out what different results I'd get if I used Google.co.uk. Here's what I found.

In addition, I found two christening records to two daughters Cecila and Florence. However, if you look on Ancestry.com, you find that the two daughters might be one daughter named Florence Elizabeth Cecilia Dodd. Therefore, children for this couple remains a fuzzy area.

Discovered World War I Correspondence
Albert Dodd and John William Dodd

TWO ASHTON BROTHERS
Corporal J. W. Dodd, who is attached to the machine gun section of the 1/9th Battalion Manchester Regiment, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dodd, of 153, Burlington street, Ashton, and who, as announced in the Reporter last week, was wounded in the leg while fighting on the Gallipoli Peninsula on August 7th, is making good progress. He is now in hospital at Plymouth, and writes on September 13th as follows: - "I have arrived in England. We are nice and comfortable, and have plenty of good food. I am able to walk a little today. I am going to have a piece of skin put on my leg, as the wound is to big to heal itself." The wound has not touched the bone, the bullet being buried in the flesh, according to a previous letter sent by Corporal DODD. A brother, Gunner ALBERT DODD, is serving with the Royal Field Artillery in France, where he has been engaged on active service for about ten weeks. In a letter to his parents he says: - "We are having it a bit quiet just now. I am writing this letter at one of our observation posts. I get 24 hours every eight days on the telephone. I have just been watching some of our shells bursting right in the German trenches. It is worth seeing. the other day we blew up one of their trench mortars and the men who were working it. We also dug one of their shells up that had not burst. It was about 9ft in solid hard clay." The observations post referred to by Gunner Dodd is a captive balloon, from which the effects of the British shellfire is seen, and the results telephoned to the battery below.

This record may indicate that I have an error in that I have John marrying Sylvia Storer in Q4 1935 and having a child (Shirley Dodd). The name Dodd is common in the area and it might well be that I have records two different John William Dodd men crossed. Any help sorting this out would be appreciated.

Conclusion
My voyage into the use of another Google search engine has answered a lot of outstanding questions and uncovered a possible problem with John William Dodd. I'm going to continue searching for additional information to see if there's anything else I've missed. As an exercise, this one has been rather profitable for my research project. So, if you are googling in other countries, you might want to try going local and see if you get results that you've missed using the American version of Google.

NewspaperArchive and Obituaries and Survivor Lists

Based on some recent successes, it appears that in addition to a new Viewer option (with a spiffy new toolbar), NewspaperArchive has added a boatload of new newspapers. I've hit pay dirt on one family that hasn't left much of a trail that I've been able to follow: The William Franklin Reid Family.

William married Margaret Elizabeth Booth and they had nine children that I know of. I haven't had much luck in stumbling across information and almost no luck with targeted searches. However, with the addition of the newspapers, I found two obituaries of interest. Specifically, the survivor lists gave me leads that I've been able to mine.

Margaret's obituary appears in The Abilene Reporter-News, Abilene, Texas, 19 Aug 1960 on page 3. The list of survivors includes children:
  • Mrs. G. T. Smith of Lovington, NM
  • Mrs. Robert Evitt of Lubbock, TX
  • Mrs. Virl Kenney of Inglewood, CA
  • Jack Reid of Breckenridge, TX
  • Loyd Reid of Knox City, TX
  • Lelon Reid of Lake Jackson, TX
  • Ardell Reid of Yuma, AZ
With place names, I was able to start tracking the men. The survivors on Ardell's obituary (The Yuma Daily Sun, Yuma, Arizona, 9 Oct 1975 on page 1) proved to be most helpful.
  • Daisy Smith of Cresson, TX (Mrs. George Thomas Smith)
  • Arlene Evitt of Weatherford, TX (Mrs. Robert Evitt)
  • Gladys Keeny of Torrance, CA (Mrs. Virl Keeny (correct spelling))
  • Lloyd Reid of Weatherford, TX
  • Leland Reid of Lake Jackson, TX (Lelon is correct)
Between knowing where to look and being able to match the daughters to their husbands, I've been able to gather quite a bit of information on this family. I'll post family info later. I'm just too busy pounding out queries for everybody's name...looking for obituaries first and then anything else I can get my hands on. If you haven't checked NewspapersArchive lately, you might want to revisit it.

Samuel Smith Continued...

With the discovery of the obit for Samuel and his two brothers, I decided to plunk down some cash for Find My Past so that I could get at the images for the 1911 English census. Here's what I found.

William Smith + Agnes Eleanor Anderson had the following children on the census:
Jane Anderson Smith b. 1893 (d. 1961 as Mrs. Issac Henshaw)
Esther Ann Smith b. 1894 (d. 1971 as Mrs. James William Bailey)
Dinah Smith b. 1895 (d. 13 Oct 1979 as Mrs. James Taylor Kay)
John William Smith b. 1897 (d. before 1957)
Ada Hannah Smith b. 1899 (d. 1899)
Samuel Smith b. 1900 (d. 23 Apr 1957...see previous post)
Clara Smith b. 1902 (d. Aug 1946)
Mary Smith b. 1903 (d. 1903)
Eleanor Smith b. 1903 (d. 1903)
Richard Smith b. 1905 (d. after 1957)
Annie Smith b. 1907 (d. 1908)
Harry Smith b. 1908 (d. after 1957)

I could confirm all of the births at the Cheshire BMD site. So, I returned to the Tameside page to search burials and hit paydirt again. Clara Smith never married and Cheshire BMD has both a birth and death record for her. In addition, I was able to find her on the Tameside site. The big surprise is that she's buried with her mother, Agnes Eleanor (Anderson) Smith.

Agnes Eleanor (Anderson) Smith
b. Apr/May/Jun 1869 Ashton-Under Lyne, Lancashire, England
d. Feb 1922 Ashton-Under Lyne, Lancashire, England
buried 9 Feb 1922 Dukinfield Cemetery and Crematorium, Dukinfield, Cheshire, England

So for about $40 U.S., I've been able to flesh out lots more of the Smith family. I've continued poking around in Find My Past. It's easy to use; however, its holdings are not as extensive as Ancestry.com.

In addition to the many Smith children, I also found more Dodd children.

Albert Dodd + Mary Jane (unknown maiden name):
Sarah Jane Dodd (b. 1891)
Albert Dodd (b. 1893)
John William Dodd (b. 1895)
Alice Dodd (b. 1898)
Nellie Dodd (b. 1900)
Alfred Dodd (b. 1901)
Unknown Dodd (b. 1905)
Harry Dodd (b. 1908)

So the same $40 bought me lots more research leads...and I still have a few more credits that are good for one year. All in all, I would say that Find My Past was a good investment.

Samuel Smith, 1900-1957, Ashton-Under-Lyne, England - Monson, Hampden County, MA, USA

Samuel is the son of William Smith and Agnes Eleanor Anderson. He was born Apr-May-Jun 1900 (no certificate yet). At age 23, Samuel sails from Southampton to New York City aboard the Olympic. He arrives in NYC 5 Sep 1923. He is going to live with his uncles' families (Joseph Anderson and John James Anderson).

Initially, he went to his Anderson relatives in Biddeford, Maine, but eventually moves on to be near Anderson relatives in Springfield, Massachusetts. The 1930 census shows him living with his aunt (Anna (Doran) Anderson). He's working at the Assembler Auto Company. The following year a city directory shows him living on his own at 790 Liberty, Springfield, Massachusetts. He is working for Westinghouse.

In a stroke of luck, while searching for something else entirely, I found his obituary.

The Springfield Union, Springfield, Massachusetts, Wednesday, 24 Apr 1957, page 29

SAMUEL SMITH

Monson, April 23--Samuel Smith of Stebbins Rd. died this afternoon in the home of his nephew, Edward Anderson. He was born in England, son of William and Agnes (Anderson) Smith and had lived here many years. He was a veteran of World Wars I and II, serving with the British Army in the first war and with the United States in the second. He was a member of the Notre Dame Club in Springfield.

He leaves two brothers, Richard and Harry, and three sisters, Mrs. June Henshaw, Mrs. Dina Kay, and Mrs. Esther Bailey, all in England, and two nephews, including Edward, with whom he made his home. Funeral will be Friday at 9 with Rev. Johnathan Morrill, pastor of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, officiating at the parlors of Palmer Funeral Service. Burial will be Woodlawn Cemetery, Biddeford, Me. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 10.

I have information on all three of his sisters; however, his brothers were a complete surprise. So it's back to Cheshire BMD or Lancashire BMD to see what I can find. And then there are the military records...so much to look for courtesies of one lucky newspaper search.

British Bonanza

For about the past 24 hours, I've been consumed with a website. My marathon session started when I asked a question on the Cheshire (England) list about the National Burial Index (NBI) CD. The latest CD costs about $50 and has 18,000,000 burials on it. Before I plunked down my cash, I wanted to know what the coverage was for Cheshire.

In response to my query, I received lots of information, all of which lead me to the conclusion that I'm not interested in the NBI CD right now. I was most grateful for the help. Trying to figure out what to buy and what to do in another country can be a challenge.

One gentleman, Adrian Bruce, replied after all of the flurry of emails had pretty much subsided. He suggested that I visit the Bereavement Services page of the Tameside website. I'm familiar with the website. In England, the county and city councils all have websites that provide their citizens with government-related information and services. In past visits, I hadn't found much of interest for me.

On faith, I followed Adrian's instructions to look for Family History - Burial and Cremation Records. Below the link is a Search the Records link for 175,000 burial and cremation records from Tameside MBC cemeteries. The entries cover Ashton (Hurst), Audenshaw, Denton, Dukinfield, Droylsden, Hyde, Mottram and Mossley. I've had Dodd and Anderson relatives living in many of these places. So I gave it a whirl...OMG! Here's what I hit.

Albert Dodd (b.18 Apr 1866 Dukinfield d. 1940). He's buried in Ashton Cemetery, Section B, Grave 523. His appointment date was 15 Jan 1940, which I assume is the day he was brought to the cemetery. Albert's grave reference is a link. Click it and you find out who else is buried in the grave with him.

Mary Jane Dodd (b. 1867 Ashton Under Lyne d. 1943 (new info!). I knew from English census entries that Albert was married to a Mary Jane, and I knew the couple had the following children: Sarah Jane, Albert, John William, Alice, and Nellie.

Alice (Dodd) Mottram (b. 1898 Ashton Under Lyne d. 1967 (new info!). Alice's appointment date was 11 Mar 1967. Using Cheshire BMD, I had narrowed down possible marriages for Alice and one of them was to a William Hector Baden Mottram. I can now look at ordering certificates with a bit of assurance that I'm on the right track.

Glenys Dodd was the last person included in the grave site. Her appointment was 22 Jan 1942. I'm not sure who Glenys is. I'm assuming she's a granddaughter that I've yet to discover. In all of this I haven't stopped to check Cheshire BMD to see what her date of birth might be.

I've been in look up overload as a result of this initial success. Here's a list of everyone at the website that I've found so far:

George Duncan Dodd (b. 17 Nov 1873 Dukinfield d. 1918 Ashton Town)

Robert Dodd (b. 3 Dec 1871 Dukinfield d. 1915) w/wife Alice (Gillell) Dodd (d. 1915)

Sylvia (Storer) Dodd (Mrs. John William Dodd) (b. 1908 Ashton Under Lyne d. 1999 Ashton) The list includes John William Dodd's but none of them look like the right one.

Agnes Eleanor (Kay) Gough (b. 1924 Stalybridge d. 2007)

Norman Gough (b. 1920 Stalybridge d. 1 Apr 2000 Ashton Under Lyne)

Isaac Henshaw (b. 1891 Dukinfield d. 1929)

Jane Anderson (Smith) Henshaw (b. 1893 Ashton Under Lyne d. 1961 Ashton and Mossley)

James Taylor Kay (b. 1892 Ashton Under Lyne d. 1957)

Dinah (Smith) Kay (b. 1895 Ashton Under Lyne d. 13 Oct 1979)

I'm sure I still have discoveries to make at the Tameside website but I'm just overwhelmed at the moment. I'm going to have to do so much backtracking to get all of the possible records.

And on ordering certificates...When you use an intermediary to order certificates, they cost north of 12 pounds (about $20). So being pretty sure you are ordering the right certificate is important if you don't want to spend a fortune on these things. In the past, I have ordered two and got one that was right and one that wasn't...batting 50/50 at these prices made me shy about ordering without some pretty good evidence that I'm ordering the right certificate. Using the Tameside website has given me lots of assurance. So I guess it's time to pull out the credit card.

I sent a great big thank you to Adrian and an open ended offer if he ever needs any info on dealing with research in the U.S. It doesn't seem like much given what I've gotten from Adrian's bit of kindness to me.

Margaret Louise (Allen) Smith

The Houston Library comes through again with an obituary. This time the obit is for Margaret (Mrs. Hoyt Oliver Smith). I've added Margaret to Find A Grave (66137877). Hoyt is from the Smith/Booth line. Here's the line:

Samuel Smith

Hmmmm...While track down all census entries for the family of John James and Anna Ellen (Doran) Anderson, I got a surprise on the 1930 census. The household list includes Samuel Smith, a nephew, living with the Anderson family in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. John's sister, Agnes Elenor Anderson, married William Smith in 1893 and their youngest child was Samuel Smith born in the spring of 1900 in Ashton Under Lyne, Lacanshire, England. Time to backtrack!

The 1820-1957 New York Passenger List shows Samuel arriving at New York City on 5 Sep 1923 aboard the Olympic. The port of departure is Southampton. The confirmation item is that the list includes his nearest living relative in England. It's his older sister Dinah Smith, 2 Gosford Street, Ashton Under Lyne, Lacanshire, England. Dinah stays in England. I can find a marriage for her in 1924 to James Taylor Kay (St. John, Dukinfield, Cheshire, England Certificate CE21/6/86).

In 1931 I can find Samuel in a city directory. He's living at 790 Liberty, Springfield, Massachusetts. The directory says that Samuel is an employee of Westinghouse. His Anderson cousins--Edward and Norman--also work for Westinghouse. After the 1931 entry, I can find no other records for Samuel Smith in Springfield. I'm hoping that when the 1940 census is released that I can pick up a record on him again.

In the meantime, I'm struggling to find records on Samuel siblings: Jane A., Esther Ann, Dinah, and John William. Anyone from England out there looking for these Smiths?

The Anderson Family Spurt

Since Vivian contacted me about the Dodd family in the UK, I thought I'd revisit the Alexander McKee Anderson line, which is my other UK line. I'm not sure if people have started posting more or if I'm just getting better a hunting for it, but I hit a bonaza. I had always assumed that nobody in the Alexander McKee Anderson line came to the US. Jeeze was I ever wrong. It turns out that after Alexander died his widow Esther Ann (Pollard) Anderson emmigrated to the US with her son Joseph Anderson.

Esther arrived at Boston, MA aboard the Cephalonia on 2 Sep 1893. In her party are her son Joseph's wife, Julia (Pierce) Anderson, and their children Mary Hannah, Esther, Henry Pierce, and Sarah Jane. The family settles in Biddeford, York County, ME. So far, it appears most of the family stays in the area. Joseph uses his cotton industry experience to work in the mills. While in ME, the Anderson's have additional children: Richard Charles, Frank A (Alexander?), Jessie H, and Elizabeth G. Sometime before the 1920 census Joseph dies. Esther also dies before the 1920 census. Julia (Pierce) Anderson lives until 9 Nov 1956 (Find a Grave Memorial 63368182). I've requested photos to see what the gravesite reveals. Julia was buried in a family plot. I've requested additional pictures. With the weather, I'm sure I won't hear a thing until the spring.

Esther's youngest son, John James Anderson, and his family also come to the USA. They arrive in 1904. The traveling party include John, his wife Anna Ellen (Doran) Anderson, and one son Edward Michael. The family settles in the Saco/Biddeford area. John dies before the 1930 census, probably in Maine. Eventually, the family relocate to Springfield, Hampden County, MA. Anna (Annie) dies in Springfield 21 Aug 1972. Their two sons appear to stay in the area and probably have children that I've yet to discover.

I've also been able to find Samuel Smith (s/o Agnes Elenor Anderson and William Smith). Agnes is another of Esther's children. Samuel is the only one I've found of the Smith's in the US so far. However, after a two-day marathon tracking Andersons, I'm learning never to jump to conclusions.

Margaret Louise Allen

Mrs. Hoyt Oliver Smith's maiden name was Margaret Louise Allen.

After using Pipl to find out that Hoyt was related to Brandon Wayne Smith, I looked up Brandon in Ancestry to see if I could begin to figure out who each of the people mentioned in the Intelius file on Pipl were. Turns out that Brandon died in 2004 at age 23. He has an exuberant obituary on Ancestry and Find A Grave (9686229). Brandon's obituary lead me to the name of his father, James Hoyt Smith, who died in 1987. I could then pursue birth and marriage records for James to construct the family group. Using James' birth record, I found out that the Miss Allen that Hoyt married 4 Aug 1942 was Margaret Louise Allen.

At the moment, I'm waiting to hear from the Houston library. I've requested a search for obituaries for Hoyt and James.
